The Savina red pepper is a cultivation of the habanero pepper, which has been selectively raised to produce spicy, heavier and larger fruits.
In February 2007, Red Savina pepper was displaced in Guinness World Records as the world's spicy pepper for Naga Jolokia pepper (Ghost Pepper). The Savina Network maintained the record from 1994 to 2006.
The Savina red peppers are said to reach a score of up to 577,000 on the scale of Scovillebut this often cited figure was never verified; an experiment of comparison carried out by a group of researchers, including Regents Professor Paul W. Bosland at the Chile Pepper Institute of the State University of New Mexico in 2005, revealed an average level of itching of 248,556 SHU for Red Savina habaneros.
SCOVILLE: 200,000-350,000
